MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell due to weak demand, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, they added.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 10-INR 30 per 100 kg as demand was subdued, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Demand improved at the reduced price levels, he said. In April, prices fell by INR 50-INR 70 per 100 kg from the peak levels, Gupta added.

Demand for the sweetener has been sluggish so far in April due to rainfall in several parts of the country. "Moisture can damage sugar, which is why traders in the resale markets are not keeping stocks in the pipeline," Gupta said.

In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady as demand was need-based, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices may remain at current levels in the days to come, he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 10-INR 30 at INR 3,910-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10-INR 30 at INR 3,900-INR 4,025 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,970-INR 4,053 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,760-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1609 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up nearly 1% at 13.63 cents per pound, tracking gains in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar.  End
