MUMBAI – Futures contracts of gold and silver fell on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India and the COMEX Wednesday as traders possibly booked profits after the contracts hit nearly a one-month high earlier in the day, analysts said. However, the fall in prices could be limited due to hopes of the US and Iran resuming talks to end hostilities in West Asia, thus reducing concerns over higher crude oil prices and inflation, they added.

At 1835 IST, the most active June contract of GOLD was down 0.2% at INR 154,525 per 10 grams on the MCX, after hitting a near-one-month high of INR 155,048 per 10 gm earlier in the day. The same-month contract on COMEX was down 0.3% at $4,836.1 per ounce, after hitting almost a one-month high of $4,895.4 per ounce earlier in the day.

At 1838, the most active May SILVER contract on the MCX was down 0.3% at INR 252,200 per kilogram, after hitting a near-one-month high of INR 255,617 per kg earlier in the day. The same-month contract on COMEX was down 1% at $78.73 per ounce, after hitting a near-one-month high of $81.16 per ounce earlier in the day.

US President Donald Trump said the second round of talks between the US and Iran could resume in the next two days. "You should stay there, really, because something could be happening over the next two days, and we're more inclined to go there," Trump told a New York Post reporter Tuesday. Iran is yet to confirm.

"Residual geopolitical risk, fragile energy flows, and inflation sensitivity is supportive for bullion while diplomatic progress reducing risk premium and profit-taking at elevated levels," Kotak Securities said in a report.

"The retreat in oil prices relieved some of the inflationary pressure that has weighed on the precious metal since the conflict began more than six weeks ago," Daniel Hynes, a senior commodity analyst at ANZ Research, said in a note.

Meanwhile, the US and Iran have agreed in principle to extend the two-week ceasefire in the military conflict in West Asia to allow time for more diplomacy, The Associated Press reported Wednesday, quoting regional officials. The original two-week period was due to end Apr. 22.

Outlook for the rest of the session:

--MCX gold seen at INR 152,000–INR 158,000 per 10 gram

--COMEX gold seen at $4,740.0–$4,900.0 an ounce

--MCX silver seen at INR 247,000-INR 256,000 per kg

--COMEX silver seen at $74.00-$82.00 an ounce

End

US$1 = INR 93.37
