MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in Uttar Pradesh as demand was sluggish, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra, however, kept prices steady as demand and supply were at par, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 10–INR 15 per 100 kilograms as demand was poor, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Demand improved slightly after the mills cut prices, he said.

The demand for sugar is generally high in April, as it is the peak summer month when ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers buy sugar. But this year, demand has been poor in April due to unusual rains across the country since mid-March. Moreover, resale traders are hesitant to stock sugar because the moisture could damage it, Gupta said.

In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady as demand was need-based and the selling pressure was low, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices may remain at current levels in the coming days, he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,910-INR 4.025 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,900-INR 4,025 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,970-INR 4,053 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,760-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1523 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were steady at 13.84 cents a pound.  End

US$1 = INR 93.37
