MUMBAI – Prices of grains were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Wheat prices were unchanged amid need-based demand, and are likely to remain range-bound till arrivals of the new rabi crop peak, they said. Maize prices were unchanged as demand matched supply while rice prices were steady owing to limited domestic demand amid tight supplies, they said.

WHEAT prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,450 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Demand is stable amid need-based purchases by millers and traders, while arrivals of the new rabi crop have started to slow down due to a delay in harvest in the state, he said. Unseasonal rainfall during the second half of March and the first half of April has held off harvests in many northern states, he said.

While procurement would have been well underway by this time of the year, supporting prices, it has made a slow start this year, Kochar said. "There are quality issues and slow management (by the government)," he said. This year, the government is purchasing the staple grain at a much slower pace due to a lack of storage space in some of its centres in Madhya Pradesh, he said. "They have good carry-over stocks from last year," he said.

A part of the crop has been affected by the unseasonal rainfall, which has increased moisture content in the grain and lowered its quality, Kochar said. The government is typically unwilling to buy poor-quality wheat for fear of it spoiling in storage. However, according to some analysts, some state governments are considering buying lower quality wheat to keep supporting farmers.

Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were unchanged at INR 2,345-INR 2,400 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 120,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices have been largely range-bound as many traders are only buying as per their needs, he said. "Buyers are only buying as much as they can sell because of ample availability everywhere," he said. Prices are expected to stay range-bound in the near term until the arrivals of the rabi crop peak, he said.

Prices of wheat in Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were also steady at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a local trader.

MAIZE price in Indore was steady at INR 1,900 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The price is unchanged as demand for the grain is on a par with supply, he said. Prices are expected to be range-bound in the near term, fluctuating by INR 100 per 100 kg depending on need-based demand from millers and traders, he said.

Prices of maize in Davangere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,750-INR 1,850 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

Prices of RICE varieties also remained steady, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice were unchanged at INR 9,700-INR 9,800 per 100 kg, and of 1121 basmati rice at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. The price of 1509 basmati rice was unchanged at INR 8,500 per 100 kg, he said.

Though exports of Indian basmati rice to top destinations in West Asia have halted, limited demand for the aromatic rice in domestic markets amid tight supplies is keeping prices steady, Vora said. Supply of the grain has been affected as key basmati-growing states, such as Punjab and Haryana, had witnessed flash floods causing severe damage to infrastructure and resulting in loss of life and crops in late August and early September.  End
