Maharashtra summer crop area dn 4% YoY at 429,936 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area covered under summer crops in Maharashtra progressed to 429,936 hectares as of Monday, down more than 4% from 449,937 hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the season is 444,109 hectares, of which nearly 97% has been covered so far.
The area sown under paddy was up at 165,344 hectares from 157,611 hectares last year, the report showed. Maize acreage declined to 81,978 hectares from 83,866 hectares a year ago, while that of bajra was down at 32,372 hectares from 34,353 hectares last year. The area sown under jowar also fell to 28,727 hectares from 29,073 hectares a year ago.
The acreage under moong was down at 15,197 hectares from 16,457 hectares last year, according to the report. Urad acreage also fell to 1,390 hectares from 1,499 hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all summer oilseeds was 101,858 hectares, down from 123,038 hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. The acreage under groundnut slipped to 75,057 hectares from 89,866 hectares last year. The area sown under sesame was also down at 23,639 hectares from 26,661 hectares a year ago.
Summer crops are grown for a short period between the kharif and rabi seasons, with harvesting done between April and May. Besides rice, sesame and groundnut are grown during this period. Other major summer crops in the state are fruits and vegetables such as bananas, pumpkins, and tomatoes.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 47.4% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 40.8% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
