Gujarat summer crop area up 6% YoY at 1.29 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under summer crops in Gujarat was 1.29 million hectares as of Monday, up over 6% from 1.21 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far has surpassed the normal acreage for the summer crop season--which is the average of the last three years--of 1.18 million hectares.
The area under paddy rose to 133,575 hectares from 128,150 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize rose to 7,663 hectares from 7,470 hectares, and that under bajra rose to 337,844 hectares from 314,597 hectares.
Moong acreage in the state so far was 64,492 hectares, up from 58,894 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad rose to 30,566 hectares from 30,195 hectares.
The total area under all summer oilseeds in the state rose to 203,271 hectares from 177,378 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under groundnut was 68,120 hectares, up from 56,103 hectares a year ago. Sesame acreage also rose to 135,151 hectares from 121,275 hectares.
The area under vegetables was up at 111,913 hectares from 104,925 hectares a year ago. The area under onion, which is not included in vegetable acreage, was 10,230 hectares, down from 10,944 hectares a year ago. Sugarcane acreage rose to 14,139 hectares from 12,563 hectares a year ago.
In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer. End
