MUMBAI – Futures contracts of aluminium on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India rose to an all-time high Monday, tracking a sharp rise in contracts on the London Metal Exchange after US President Donald Trump said the US would block any ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, intensifying concerns about supply.
The April futures of ALUMINIUM on MCX rose to a record high of INR 367.95 per kilogram earlier in the day. "Aluminium's strength is supply driven, reflecting disruptions linked to the US-led blockade of Iranian ports, tightening availability from a region accounting for nearly 9% of global output," Kotak Securities said in a report.
Trump said the Strait of Hormuz would be blocked by the US Navy after peace negotiations with Iran that stretched to over 20 hours ended without an agreement. "No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas," Trump said in a post on Truth Social, adding that any Iranian who fires at us or at peaceful vessels will be "blown to hell".
"Any sustained disruption to shipping through Hormuz would tighten availability and support regional premiums, especially as inventories remain relatively lean," analysts at ING Economics said in a report. "Elevated energy prices are adding to the upside pressure for aluminium, reinforcing cost support for smelters at a time when power markets remain highly volatile," they added.
