MUMBAI - Prices of wheat showed a mixed trend, while those of maize and rice were steady in key spot markets across the country Monday, traders said. Wheat prices rose in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, due to low arrivals, they said. Maize prices were unchanged as demand matched supply, while rice prices were steady as the market is waiting for more cues from West Asia.

 

WHEAT prices in the Vashi market rose by INR 50 per 100 kilograms from Friday to INR 2,650 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader. Prices have risen due to a slowdown in arrivals of the new rabi wheat crop, he said.

 

"Farmers don't want to sell their wheat at this lower range (of prices)," he said. Prices have been ruling in a lower range in the past few months, which is a significant drop compared to prices in the same period last year, when they had breached the INR 3,000 per 100 kg mark. Prices are expected to rise further in the near term as the slowdown in arrivals is likely to continue for the next few weeks, he said.

 

Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,450 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are unchanged as demand has matched pace with a slight rise in arrivals of the new rabi crop, he said. However, arrivals are expected to slow down over the next few days as the harvest of the new rabi crop has been disrupted in some regions, he said. "Harvest in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and some parts of Madhya Pradesh is late this year because of the unseasonal rainfall," he said. Prices are expected to rise by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg in the near term due to a decline in arrivals, he said. 

 

Meanwhile, the government's procurement of the staple grain has seen a slow start, traders said. The shortage of gunny bags has hurt procurement, Kochar said. The ongoing war in West Asia has disrupted supplies of polypropylene raffia granules, a key raw material used to manufacture plastic sacks, according to sources. India relies on imports of this key input, making domestic availability sensitive to global disruptions. Government agencies primarily use jute bags, supplemented by high-density polyethylene or polypropylene sacks, for wheat procurement.

 

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 1,900 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are unchanged as demand for the coarse grain is on par with its supply, he said. Arrivals of the new rabi maize crop are expected to peak in mid-May, which could exert pressure on prices, he said. 

 

Prices of maize in Davangere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,750-INR 1,850 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. 

 

Prices of some RICE varieties remained steady, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice were unchanged at INR 9,700-INR 9,800 per 100 kg, and that of 1121 basmati rice were also steady at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, he said. Prices of 1509 basmati rice were unchanged at INR 8,500 per 100 kg, he said.

 

Prices of rice have stabilised after a surge last week due to optimism surrounding the peace talks between the US and Iran, Vora said. However, with no agreement reached by the two countries over the weekend, the Indian market is now in a wait-and-watch stance, he said. Countries in West Asia are the top destinations for Indian basmati rice exports. Prices are also steady amid stable demand for basmati rice within India, he said.  End
