MUMBAI – Prices of tur fell Monday while prices of chana showed a mixed trend and prices of urad were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices were weighed down by seasonally low demand amid ample availability, they said. Chana prices fell in some markets due to muted demand, and prices of urad were steady due to lack of fresh cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 per 100 kg from Friday to INR 5,650-INR 5,675 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices were weighed down by sluggish demand for the legume, he said. "Buyers who wanted to stock up on chana already bought the legume in bulk in the first week of April," he said. Though arrivals of the new rabi crop have declined as more farmers are selling their crop to the government, seasonally low demand is likely to keep prices range-bound to weak, he said. The consumption of pulses typically reduces during summer as they are deemed to cause heat in the body, he said.

The government's procurement of chana in Maharashtra is robust, with the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India purchasing the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is higher than the prevailing prices in spot markets, he said. "The government wants to fill up their buffer stocks this year to make up for their failure last year," he said. Chana procurement last year ended at 320,000 tonnes against the goal of 2.8 million tonnes.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,474-INR 5,525 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola fell by INR 100 per 100 kg from Friday to INR 7,800-INR 7,825 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Prices are on a downtrend due to low demand amid ample supply of the legume, he said. Similar to chana, the consumption of tur sees a seasonal low during April and May, he said. Prices are weighed down further as arrivals of the kharif crop are still ongoing, he said. "There are good arrivals of the kharif crop every day, but the market had expected it to slow down by now because of reports of crop damage in Maharashtra and Karnataka," he said. Earlier during the year, reports of damage to the crop due to colder weather in Maharashtra had raised fears of lower production in the state, he said. However, little to no damage has been recorded, he said.

Prices are expected to remain subdued as demand is unlikely to see any spike at least till June, Kedia said. "There won't be a major downtrend because there will be need-based demand from millers and traders every-now-and-then, but prices won't see an uptrend till June," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 100 per 100 kg from the previous week to INR 8,000-INR 8,100 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,325-INR 8,350 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, they said. Prices were steady due to lack of fresh cues, they said.

Urad prices are likely to fall in the near term due to weak demand, with a seasonal slowdown in consumption and lower purchases by hotels, restaurants, and caterers due to gas supply shortages, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. Steady arrivals of the rabi crop in Andhra Pradesh and the availability of imports from Myanmar are also weighing on prices, it said.  End
