MUMBAI – India's import of vegetable oils, which includes edible and non-edible oils, in March were 1.19 million tonnes, up 11% from 1.07 million tonnes imported in the same period last year, according to data released on Monday by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India. Total imports of edible oil in March rose to 1.17 million tonnes from 1.05 million tonnes a year ago.

In March, imports of crude soyoil fell to 287,220 tonnes from 355,358 tonnes a year ago, while that of crude sunflower were up at 196,486 tonnes from 190,645 tonnes a year ago. Imports of crude palm oil during the month nearly doubled to 673,965 tonnes from 343,949 tonnes last year, the data showed.

Refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein oil imports in March were 13,498 tonnes, down from 75,614 tonnes a year ago, according to the data. In the Nov-Mar period, only 38,240 tonnes of refined, bleached and deodorised palm oil were imported, against 669,414 tonnes a year ago.

"The import data for Nov 25–Mar 26 reflects a moderate 8% year-on-year increase in India's vegetable oil imports, indicating continued structural dependence on global supplies; however, the month-on-month decline in March suggests a clear demand correction driven by high international prices, rupee depreciation, and comfortable domestic availability, particularly from the mustard crop," the association said. In February, total vegetable oil imports were 1.32 million tonnes.

Crude palm oil imports during Nov-Mar were 3.40 million tonnes, up from 1.72 tonnes a year ago, the data showed. India's crude soyoil imports during the same period were 1.74 million tonnes compared to 1.91 million tonnes a year ago, and that of sunflower oil down at 1.10 million tonnes from 1.31 million tonnes last year.

The government increased the duty difference between crude and refined oils from 8.25% to 19.25% on May 31, which resulted in a drop in refined palm oil imports. However, under the South Asian Free Trade Area agreement, a large quantity of refined soybean and sunflower oil were shipped to India from Nepal at zero duty.

Indonesia and Malaysia are major suppliers of refined, bleached and deodorised palmolein and crude palm oil to India. During Nov-Mar, Indonesia was the biggest supplier of crude palm oil at 1.52 million tonnes, followed by Malaysia, which supplied 1.31 million tonnes of crude palm oil. Indonesia also supplied 23,447 tonnes of refined, bleached and deodorised palmolein, while Malaysia supplied 8,000 tonnes of the same oil, according to the data.

During Nov-Mar, total edible oil imports by India were 6.45 million tonnes compared with 5.93 million tonnes a year ago. Vegetable oil imports during the same period were at 6.57 million tonnes compared with 6.10 million tonnes a year ago.

As of Apr. 1, domestic edible oil stocks at ports were 609,000 tonnes, down from 820,000 tonnes a year ago, and pipeline stocks rose to 1.29 million tonnes from 846,000 tonnes, the data showed.

The following table details edible oil imports in March, in tonnes, compared with year-ago levels, with the change in percentage, according to data from the SEA:
