MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets in Uttar Pradesh rose as there was some demand after mills cut prices the previous day, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady as demand was need-based, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg as demand improved slightly after they cut prices Thursday and earlier in the week, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. In resale markets, prices rose by INR 5 per 100 kg, he said. Prices had fallen by around INR 40 per 100 kg in April, Gupta added.

Demand for the sweetener has been sluggish so far in April due to rainfall in several parts of the country. "Moisture can damage sugar, which is why traders in the resale markets are not keeping stocks in the pipeline," Gupta said.

In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady as demand was need-based, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices may remain at the current levels in the days to come, he said.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,910-INR 4,050 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,910-INR 4,050 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,970-INR 4,053 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,760-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1753 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down nearly 1% at 14 cents a pound, driven by high global sugar output. On Mar. 27, Unica, the Brazilian Sugarcane and Bioenergy Industry Association, reported that cumulative sugar output in the central and south regions of Brazil from October to mid-March was up 0.7% on year at 40.25 million tonnes. Sugar pices also fell tracking losses in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices decrease the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar.  End
