MUMBAI – Malaysia's crude palm oil production rose over 7% on month to 1.38 million tonnes in March, according to preliminary data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board. The country's palm oil exports also increased last month, the data showed. But stocks of crude palm oil fell in March. Malaysia's total palm oil stocks fell 16% on month to 2.27 million tonnes in March. However, exports of palm oil rose nearly 41% to 1.55 million tonnes, the board said.

 

A survey by Reuters had forecast inventories at 2.18 million tonnes, with output seen at 1.34 million tonnes and exports at 1.56 million tonnes in March. Malaysia is the world's second-largest producer of crude palm oil and India is the largest consumer of edible oils.

 

At 1608 IST, the most-active June contract of crude palm oil was at 4,535 ringgits or INR 106,230.02 per tonne, down 2.3% from the previous close. Falling inventories in the world's second-largest producer of the tropical oil could support benchmark Malaysian futures.

 

Imports of processed palm oil and palm kernel oil by Malaysia were at 66,801 tonnes and 8,598 tonnes respectively. Processed palm oil imports were down 12.4% and imports of palm kernel oil were lower 10% on month, according to the data.
