MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were steady, while prices of tur showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of tur fell in some markets due to sluggish demand, while they were unchanged in others, they said. Chana prices were steady amid some need-based demand, while masur prices were unchanged due to lack of fresh cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,650-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices were unchanged amid some need-based demand for the legume, he said. "All the festivals for the season are over, so there is not much demand now, just from millers and traders looking to make some need-based purchases," he said. Prices are expected to remain range-bound in the near term as no spike in demand is seen till Jun-Jul, he said. "Seasonal demand increases during June and July, so till then prices will remain in this range," he said.

Prices are yet to buckle under arrival pressure as arrivals of the new rabi crop have not increased, Jain said. "Crop from some of the major producing regions such as Bhopal has not started yet," he said. Even if arrivals increase, a part of the crops are likely to be purchased by the government, easing most of the pressure from spot market prices, he said. The government's procurement, which has had a slow start in Madhya Pradesh, is likely to catch pace with arrivals in the near term, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,525-INR 5,575 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, are steady at INR 7,950-INR 7,975 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices have settled after a downtrend in the past few days, he said. "Prices have been falling by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg every other day since last week, so now they have settled," he said. Demand for the legume has been sluggish, with many traders, millers, and stockists having made large purchases in the last week of March, he said.

Prices have also been weighed down by the ample availability of both the domestic and imported varieties of the legume, Gupta said. Though there were reports of major crop losses in Karnataka and some losses in Maharashtra due to unfavourable weather, the overall damage has been lower than expected, he said. "There is some crop loss in Karnataka, but that's it, good arrivals are still coming to the market," he said. Ongoing imports from Myanmar are also keeping prices of the domestic variety in check, he said. "The imports are of lower quality, but they are cheaper, so some big buyers such as restaurants prefer it over the domestic variety," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 8,100-INR 8,200 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,950-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices were unchanged amid lack of new cues, he said. While demand for the legume is tepid, prices were supported by the government's robust procurement of the legume, he said. Unlike chana, arrivals of masur are in full swing, and most of it is being purchased by the government, he said. The government is buying the legume at the minimum support price of INR 7,000 per 100 kg, which is higher than the prices prevailing in most spot markets.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, remained steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety were also steady at INR 7,500-INR 8,300 per 100 kg.  End
