MUMBAI – The area covered under rabi crops in Telangana reached 8.94 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up nearly 14% on year from 7.72 million acres, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far has surpassed the normal acreage for the season, which is 6.87 million acres.

 

The area sown under paddy was up at 6.41 million acres from 5.78 million acres a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under maize rose to 1.50 million acres from 883,332 acres last year, and that of jowar was up at 400,056 acres from 353,022 acres a year ago. Wheat acreage was 8,185 acres, up from 5,554 acres last year.

 

Chana acreage so far fell to 215,666 acres from 221,956 acres last year, the report showed. The acreage under urad was down at 40,111 acres from 49,686 acres a year ago, and that of moong fell to 11,835 acres from 12,080 acres last year. The total area sown under all rabi pulses slipped to 280,725 acres from 299,608 acres a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all rabi oilseeds in the state was 270,227 acres, down from 311,524 acres sown in the previous year, according to the report. Groundnut acreage fell to 201,334 acres from 250,976 acres last year, and that of sesame was also down at 26,469 acres from 28,785 acres a year ago.

 

Sugarcane acreage rose to 18,960 acres from 16,230 acres a year ago, the report showed. The area sown under tobacco was down at 11,049 acres from 18,310 acres last year.

 

Farmers in the state have begun harvesting rabi crops, the report said. The harvest of rabi groundnut, chana, and moong sown so far is nearly completed, it said. Around 70% and 34% of the area sown so far under urad and maize, respectively, has been harvested. Around 25% of the acreage under sesame, 22% of the acreage under jowar, and 5% of acreage under rice so far has been harvested, it said.

 

During the northeast monsoon, which spans from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, the state received 189.6 millimetres of rainfall, 72?ove normal for the period. From Jan. 1 to Feb. 28 — which is termed as winter rainfall — the state recorded a 48?ficit in rainfall, the report said. In March, rainfall in the state was 6?low normal at 12 millimetres. In April so far, the state has recorded 1.4 millimetres of rains, which is 64?low normal, it said. "The good rainfall received across the state is expected to facilitate favourable soil moisture conditions, leading to improved crop coverage during the current Yasangi (rabi) season," it said.

 

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 425.89 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 385.92 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to the report.  End
