NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all the spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange fell Thursday. Turmeric prices fell as traders booked profit after the contract hit a two-month high on Wednesday, and weak demand weighed on jeera and coriander prices, analysts said.
The most-active May contract of TURMERIC fell 3.2% to INR 16,350 per 100 kilograms, as traders possibly booked profits after the contract hit a two-month high of INR 16,988 in the previous session. On Wednesday, the contract had risen over 4% due to lower-than-normal arrivals in key markets.
"Farmers and stockists are holding back supplies in anticipation of better prices, which has tightened availability in the spot market," Kedia Advisory said in a note. Further, issues over quality due to rhizome rot and aflatoxin risks have affected the supply of export-grade material, the brokerage added.
The most-active May contract of JEERA was down 1.7% at INR 22,300 per 100 kg, as tepid export demand and comfortable supply weighed on prices. "On the demand side, premium-quality cumin continues to see steady buying, but overall export performance remains under pressure. Shipments have declined significantly both on a monthly and cumulative basis, reflecting subdued global demand and ongoing geopolitical disruptions affecting trade flows," Kedia Advisory said.
The most-active May contract of CORIANDER was down 0.5% at INR 13,084 per 100 kg due to weak domestic and overseas demand. However, expectations of lower production because of drop in acreage are likely to support prices, SMC Global Securities said in a note.
Following were the prices of the most-active spices contracts at the time of closing at 1700 IST:
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
Turmeric May | NCDEX | 100 | 16,350 | -546 |
Jeera May | NCDEX | 100 | 22,300 | -385 |
Coriander May | NCDEX | 100 | 13,084 | -66 |
