MUMBAI – Prices of chana and urad were steady, while prices of tur showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices rose in some markets on higher need-based demand, while they were steady in others, they said, adding that chana prices were unchanged amid stable demand, and prices of urad were steady due to lack of fresh cues.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices were unchanged amid stable demand for the legume, he said. "It is not 'good' demand, but you could say it is average demand," he said. Prices are yet to be weighed down by new arrivals of the rabi crop as a part of it is being sold to the government, he said.

The state government in Madhya Pradesh has begun procuring the legume at some centres across the state, Kochar said. The government is purchasing the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,850 per 100 kg, which is higher than prices prevailing in the spot market. This is encouraging farmers to sell their crop to the government over bringing it to the markets, he said.

The ongoing spell of rainfall and hailstorms across the country, and particularly northern states, has not impacted the chana crop, according to analysts. Most of the chana crop in states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh has already been harvested or are in the end-stages of being harvested, escaping much of the wet spell, they said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were unchanged at INR 5,450-INR 5,500 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 8,025-INR 8,050 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices were steady in some markets, while they rose in others amid need-based demand from traders and wholesalers, he said. Though the consumption of some pulses typically declines during summer as they are deemed to produce 'heat' in the body, many traders and wholesalers stock up on the legume during this time of the year, he said.

"There is no consumption demand, it can be called storage demand instead," Kedia said. With the start of the new financial year in April, many buyers from rural areas will stock up on the legume for the next 6–12 months, he said. "Unlike urban consumers, who make purchases to fulfil only short-term needs, people in villages will stock up on the legume to prepare themselves for the next few months," he said. As such, prices are likely to remain range-bound with a slightly positive bias in the near term, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,375-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, they said. Prices were steady due the absence of new cues, they said.

Arrivals of the new summer crop from Madhya Pradesh are expected to begin from early June, which is expected to add to supplies, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. Imports from Myanmar are ongoing, and sowing of urad in Brazil is progressing well, with its shipments expected to reach India by Jul-Aug, it said. In the medium term, prices are likely to depend on the supply of urad from Myanmar and the cost and freight rates of imports, it said.  End
