NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of coriander and jeera fell after witnessing gains recently, while those of turmeric were nearly unchanged on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Tuesday, according to analysts.
The most active May contract of CORIANDER was down 0.5% at INR 13,518 per 100 kilogram on profit booking, after it hit a one-year high of INR 13,766 per 100 kg on Monday. Prices have been rising supported by strong buying interest amid lower acreage and expectations of a weaker crop this season, SMC Global Securities said.
The most active May contract of JEERA was down 1% at INR 22,505 per 100 kg, snapping a five-session rally. Prices had been on an uptrend since Mar. 30 when the contract opened at INR 22,360 per 100 kg. The recent gains have been largely driven by weather concerns in key producing regions, as per Kedia Advisory.
Arrivals in mandis also declined in March, falling 23% on year to 80,716 tonnes, indicating tight near-term supply, SMC Global said.
Meanwhile, rising temperatures in north Gujarat, as flagged by the India Meteorological Department, could affect seed development in late-sown crops and potentially weigh on yields, Kedia Advisory noted. Overall production is estimated to decline around 5% this year, with Gujarat likely to see a sharper drop due to reduced acreage and weaker yields, it added.
The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was steady at INR 16,210 per 100 kg. Prices have been rising following reports of crop damage in parts of Maharashtra due to unseasonal rain, SMC Global Securities said in a note. While the rain has affected crop quality in key producing regions, the extent of damage is still being assessed, it said. However, continuous arrivals in the market are putting pressure on prices, analysts said.
Following were the prices of the most-active spices contracts at the time of closing at 1700 IST:
Contract | Exchange | Unit (kg) | Price (INR) | Change (INR) |
Turmeric May | NCDEX | 100 | 16,210 | 2 |
Jeera May | NCDEX | 100 | 22,505 | (-)240 |
