MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in the key market of Uttar Pradesh Tuesday as demand was poor. Traders are not eager to buy as they expect prices to fall further. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady as demand and supply were on par.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg due to subdued demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Demand is subdued because of heavy showers in several parts of the country, he said. "Moisture can damage sugar which is why traders in the resales market are not keeping stocks in the pipeline," Gupta said. Prices may fall further, which is why traders are hesitant to buy the sweetener at the moment, he said.
"There were expectations that demand will be good during April as it is a peak summer month. But traders in the resale market are only buying as per the need instead of stocking up sugar, as there is low demand from eateries and restaurants amid the cooking gas crisis," Gupta added. Prices in the resale market were down INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg, he said.
Sugar prices in Maharashtra were steady as demand was limited, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Kuvadia expects prices to rise slightly in the coming days and then stabilise.
Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 20-INR 25 at INR 3,925-INR 4,050 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 20-INR 25 at INR 3,925-INR 4,050 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,970-INR 4,053 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat 10 at INR 3,760-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1656 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange fell 1.4% to 14.76 cents per pound on anticipation of high global sugar output. End
