Gujarat summer crop area up 9% on year at 1.23 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area sown under summer crops in Gujarat reached 1.23 million hectares as of Monday, up 9% from 1.13 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The acreage so far has surpassed the normal acreage for the summer crop season--which is the average of the last three years--of 1.18 million hectares.
The acreage under paddy rose to 131,960 hectares from 126,606 hectares last year, the report showed. The area sown under maize rose to 7,415 hectares from 7,268 hectares a year ago, and bajra rose to 325,128 hectares from 267,190 hectares last year.
Moong acreage in the state so far was 59,739 hectares, up from 57,513 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under urad rose to 30,271 hectares from 30,017 hectares last year.
The total area sown under all summer oilseeds in the state rose to 197,697 hectares from 172,904 hectares covered in the previous year, the report showed. The area sown under groundnut was 68,004 hectares, up from 53,335 hectares sown in the previous year. Sesame acreage also rose to 129,693 hectares from 119,569 hectares last year.
The area under vegetables was up at 103,579 hectares from 99,369 hectares a year ago. The area under onion, which is not included in the vegetable acreage, was 9,795 hectares, down from 10,934 hectares last year. Sugarcane acreage rose to 11,852 hectares from 10,884 hectares a year ago.
In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer. End
