MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar were steady in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra as demand remained muted, traders said. Prices are likely to increase in the coming days as demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers usually picks up in April, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as there was limited demand at the existing prices, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. "There were expectations that demand will be good during April as it is a peak summer month. But traders in the resale market are only buying as per the need instead of stocking up sugar, as there is low demand from eateries and restaurants amid the cooking gas crisis," Gupta said. Prices in the resale market fell INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg, he said.
As April is a peak summer month, mills may increase sweetener rates if there is firm demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, Gupta said, adding that prices are still higher than a month ago.
Sugar prices in Maharashtra were steady as demand was limited, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Kuvadia expects prices to rise slightly in the coming days and then stabilise.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,915-INR 4,035 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,915-INR 4,035 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,970-INR 4,053 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat 10 at INR 3,760-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
