MUMBAI – Prices of grains were steady in key spot markets across the country Monday, traders said. Prices of wheat were unchanged amid limited demand for the grain, and those of maize and rice were steady amid stable demand, they said. The market is assessing the extent of damage to the standing rabi wheat and maize crop due to the ongoing wet spell in many parts of the country, which is likely to impact prices in the near term, they said.

 

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,300-INR 2,451 per 100 kg, said local trader Ravi Mehta. Arrivals rose by 25,000 bags to 200,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices are steady amid some demand from millers and stockists, he said. "There's not that much demand--just that some millers and stockists are purchasing it because rates are a bit lower," he said. Demand has also not risen as arrivals of the new rabi crop are of mixed quality, he said. "Some of the arrivals are of good quality and being sold at a bit of a higher price while others are of average quality and some of lower quality," he said. 

 

Prices are likely to be bound in a narrow range, fluctuating by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg this week, Mehta said. In the near term, the movement of prices will depend on the average quality of the crop once peak arrivals of the wheat crop begin, he said. Peak arrivals are expected to begin after mid-April, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader from Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

 

Prices of wheat in Indore were unchanged at INR 2,450 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The market is assessing the ongoing arrivals of the crop and the price trend after it was shut since Mar. 26 for various festivals and the financial year-end, he said. Prices of wheat in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, were unchanged at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a local trader.

 

MAIZE prices in Indore were steady at INR 1,900 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Prices are unchanged amid steady demand for the coarse grain, he said. Arrivals of the new rabi crop have begun, and are expected to increase in the next few weeks, he said. Similar to wheat, the maize crop has also been damaged by the ongoing wet spell in many parts of the country--particularly north India, he said. While there are no reports of crop loss, the quality of the standing crop has been affected due to prolonged exposure to moisture, he said.

 

Prices of maize in Davangere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,750-INR 1,850 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

 

Prices of various RICE varieties were also steady, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice were INR 8,500–INR 8,700 per 100 kg, 1121 basmati at INR 9,400–INR 9,500 per 100 kg, and 1509 basmati rice at INR 8,500 per 100 kg. Prices are unchanged as demand for both basmati and non-basmati varieties of rice are currently stable, he said.  End
