NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all the spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange were up Monday. The price of coriander was supported by expectation of reduced production and tightening supplies, analysts said. Jeera rose on concern about weather disruptions in key producing regions while turmeric futures rose on reports of crop damage in parts of Maharashtra due to recent unseasonal rains, they said.

At 1420 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was up 0.8% at INR 15,850 per 100 kilograms following reports of crop damage in parts of Maharashtra due to unseasonal rain, SMC Global Securities said in a note. While the rain has affected crop quality in key producing regions, the extent of damage is still being assessed, it said.

Lower arrivals at key markets also continue to exert upward pressure on the price of turmeric, analysts said. Arrivals are below normal and both domestic and export demand remain strong, giving the market a solid base, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Lower carry-forward stocks and reduced holdings of farmers and stockists are also supporting prices, it said.

The most-active May contract of CORIANDER was up 1.7% at INR 13,260 per 100 kg, supported by strong buying interest amid lower sowing acreage and expectations of a weaker crop this season, SMC Global said. About 40–50% of the total crop has already reached markets, the brokerage said. Further inflows from key producing states such as Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are expected in the coming days, it added. SMC Global sees coriander prices facing "resistance at elevated levels".

The most-active April contract of JEERA was up 0.4% at INR 22,405 per 100 kg on concern about the weather in key producing regions, as per Kedia Advisory. At mandis, arrivals in March were down 23% on year at 80,716 tonnes, indicating tight near-term supply, SMC Global said.

Moreover, rising temperatures in north Gujarat, as flagged by the India Meteorological Department, could impact seed development in late-sown crops, potentially reducing yields further, Kedia Advisory said. Overall production is estimated to decline around 5% this year, with Gujarat seeing a sharp drop owing to reduced acreage and weaker yields, it said.

SMC Global sees jeera prices "rangebound" due to restrained buying interest at elevated levels.
