NEW DELHI – Hailstorm activity is likely to continue over parts of northwest India, with fresh wet spells expected next week under the influence of successive western disturbances, the India Meteorological Department said.

 

Hailstorms are likely over Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi between Sunday and Wednesday, over Jammu and Kashmir between Tuesday and Friday, and over east Uttar Pradesh and east Rajasthan on Wednesday, the weather bureau said.

 

A western disturbance currently persists over central Pakistan and neighbouring regions, while another fresh system is expected to affect northwest India from Tuesday, leading to a renewed wet spell with peak activity around Tuesday and Wednesday, the department said.

 

Under the influence of these systems, fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over the western Himalayan region and adjoining plains over the next several days. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kilometres per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected at isolated places across the region on multiple days through Wednesday, the department said. 

 

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, the department said.

 

A broader spell of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected over central, east, and south peninsular India till Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Hailstorms are likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and central Maharashtra on Saturday, over Jharkhand between Sunday and Tuesday, and over West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar on Tuesday and Wednesday.

 

Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely over central India over the next five days, the department said. Similar weather is expected over Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat at isolated places during this period, with hailstorm activity likely over Central Maharashtra on Saturday.

 

In south peninsular India, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and adjoining regions till Wednesday. Heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala between Saturday and Tuesday, the department said.

 

In northeast India, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds is likely over the next few days, with heavy rainfall expected over Arunachal Pradesh on Monday and between Wednesday and Friday, and over Assam and Meghalaya on Sunday, Wednesday, and Thursday, according to the weather bureau.

 

Day temperatures are likely to remain near or below normal across most parts of the country next week, the department said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Odisha on Saturday, the weather bureau added.  End
