NEW DELHI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was 85.698 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, accounting for 46.7% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 16.4% from a year ago and 26.7% above the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed.
In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 8.750 billion cubic metres, which is 44.1% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 22.6% of the capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 9.752 billion cubic metres, representing 44.8% of storage capacity, compared with 38.1% in the corresponding period last year. However, water levels were below the normal storage level of 45.4%. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.
The water level in the western region was 21.308 billion cubic metres, accounting for 55.9% of the storage capacity, as against about 48.5% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.
In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 25.943 billion cubic metres, accounting for 53.4% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 45.3% a year ago.
The water level in the southern region was 19.945 billion cubic metres, 36.1% of the storage capacity, compared with 36.8% a year ago. End
