MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell Thursday as there was little demand at higher price levels, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady as demand was need-based.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kilograms as demand was sluggish at higher rates, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. On Wednesday, prices had risen by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg on hopes of good demand from households and bulk consumers of sugar, but demand was muted at higher prices, he said.

"Prices have fallen from Wednesday, but are still higher than last month's," Gupta said. As April is a peak summer month, mills may increase sweetener rates if there is firm demand from ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, he added.

In Maharashtra, sugar prices were steady as demand was limited, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Supply is on par with demand at the moment, hence there is no movement in prices, he said. Kuvadia expects prices to rise slightly in the coming days and then stabilise.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,915-INR 4,035 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10-INR 15 at INR 3,915-INR 4,035 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,970-INR 4,053 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat 10 at INR 3,760-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1931 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange rose 0.3% to 15.13 cents per pound tracking higher crude oil prices on the NYMEX. Diversion of sucrose for ethanol manufacturing increases as crude oil prices rise, which then decreases the availability of sugar for consumption.  End

US$1 = INR 93.10
