MUMBAI – Prices of tur and chana showed mixed trends, while prices of urad were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices rose in some markets amid a slowdown in arrivals, they said. Prices of tur fell in some markets due to sluggish demand, and urad prices were steady due to low market activity, they said.

TUR prices in Solapur fell INR 50 from Wednesday to INR 7,500-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, while prices of the old crop were steady at INR 7,200-INR 7,550 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Around 18–20 trucks carrying 20,000–25,000 kg of the new crop and one to two trucks with old tur arrived in the market, he said.

Prices fell amid sluggish demand for the legume as many millers and traders had purchased in bulk to fill up their processing pipelines last week, Srinvas said. Most market participants are also away for Hanuman Jayanti, which is also weighing on prices. Though arrivals have also declined as farmers stay away, some are still selling their crops in the market instead of selling to the government, he said. "The government is procuring tur at INR 8,000 per 100 kg, and market rates are either the same or above that range, so why would most farmers want to sell to the government?" he said.

The movement in prices in the near term is likely to be determined once markets across the country reopen on Monday, Srinvas said. Many markets are expected to remain shut for the rest of the week due to bank holidays and an extended holiday amid many festivals this week, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,500-INR 8,600 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

CHANA prices in Delhi rose by INR 25 from Wednesday to INR 5,550-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices rose amid a slowdown in arrivals as most farmers stayed away for Hanuman Jayanti, they said. Arrivals in many markets across the country have been low since the government began procuring the legume, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader from Akola, Maharashtra. "The handful of farmers who were still bringing their crop to the market are celebrating Hanuman Jayanti, so there are little to no arrivals for those looking to make need-based purchases," he said.

The government is procuring chana at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg, which is more attractive to farmers than the lower rates prevailing in spot markets currently, Kedia said. "This year NAFED'S (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd.) purchases are robust, and the government is also processing the payments to farmers within a week, which is quicker than usual," he said. The new rabi crop this year is also of better quality, which makes it easier to sell to the government, he said. The government only purchases crops that meet the fair average quality standards, he said.

Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were unavailable as the market was shut for Hanuman Jayanti, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices in Akola were unchanged at INR 5,650-INR 5,675 per 100 kg, Kedia said.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,475-INR 8,500 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were also steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, they said.

Arrivals of the rabi crop have declined though overall supply remains comfortable, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. The government's procurement of the kharif urad crop has reached about 80,000 tonnes so far, and it has indicated that a buffer of around 100,000 tonnes would be sufficient. The April deliveries of urad shipments from Myanmar are expected to arrive in the first week of the month, the association said.  End
