Andhra Pradesh rabi area up 47% on yr at 2.76 million hectares as of Wednesday

MUMBAI – Farmers in Andhra Pradesh have sown rabi crops across 2.76 million hectares as of Wednesday, up nearly 47% from 1.88 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The area covered so far has surpassed the normal for the season, which is 2.07 million hectares.

 

The acreage of paddy was up at 919,000 hectares from 672,000 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize rose to 502,000 hectares from 186,000 hectares a year ago, while that under jowar was 115,000 hectares, up from 79,000 hectares last year.

 

Chana acreage in the state rose to 412,000 hectares from 287,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad was up at 334,000 hectares from 285,000 hectares a year ago, and that under moong rose to 79,000 hectares from 57,000 hectares last year. The total acreage of all rabi pulses was 920,000 hectares, up from 729,000 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area under all rabi oilseeds so far was 137,000 hectares, up from 75,000 hectares covered a year ago, the report showed. Groundnut acreage was up at 92,000 hectares from 52,000 hectares a year ago. The area sown under sesame rose to 26,000 hectares from 19,000 hectares last year.

 

Tobacco acreage in the state stood at 117,000 hectares, against 121,000 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under cotton was up at 17,000 hectares against 2,000 hectares a year ago.

 

From Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 — in the northeast monsoon season — the state recorded 338.9 millimetres of rainfall, which is 18%  above the normal for the period, the report showed. During Jan. 1-Feb. 28, it recorded 3.4 millimetres of rainfall, 79%  below normal for the period. During Mar. 1-Apr. 1, the state recorded 12.6 millimetres of rainfall, which is 9.6% above normal for the period.

 

The water level in reservoirs across Andhra Pradesh was 47.79% of the live storage capacity as of Thursday, compared to 41.7% a year ago, according to data from the state's water resources department.  End
