MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar rose in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra at the start of the month on anticipation of firm demand, traders said. Since it is the beginning of the month, prices are likely to remain firm for some time, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kilograms on hopes of good demand from households and bulk consumers of sugar such as ice-cream and cold-drink manufacturers, Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India, said. However, Gupta said demand was limited at higher prices on Wednesday. Prices are likely to move up as April is the peak summer month, he said.
In Maharashtra, sweetener prices rose INR 10 per 100 kg due to firm demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices may rise further by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg before stabilising, he said. The sugar sales quota for April is sufficient for the month's demand and is in line with market expectations, Kuvadia said.
On Thursday, the Centre announced a sugar sales quota of 2.30 million tonnes for April, down from 2.35 million tonnes a year ago but higher than 2.25 million tonnes in March. Market participants had expected the sales quota for April to be around 2.30 million-2.35 million tonnes, as demand for sugar is expected to rise with the progression of the summer season.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,925-INR 4,050 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,920-INR 4,040 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Up INR 10 at INR 3,970-INR 4,053 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Up INR 10 at INR 3,760-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1804 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 2.5% at 15.13 cents per pound, tracking losses in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices decrease the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar. End
