India Apr-Jan spices exports up 8% at 1.45 million tonnes, jeera down 15%

MUMBAI – India's spices exports rose 8% on year to 1.45 million tonnes in Apr-Jan from 1.35 million tonnes a year ago, according to data released by Spices Board India. In terms of value, exports were down 0.6% on year at $3.64 billion.

 

According to the data, India exported 166,878 tonnes of jeera in Apr-Jan, down 15% from the year-ago period. Exports of fennel fell the most, 61%, to 28,422 tonnes. Exports of celery fell 33% to 4,915 tonnes. Pepper imports fell 6% to 16,178 tonnes during the same time.

 

On the other hand, exports of small cardamom rose the most, 132%, to 12,281 tonnes during Apr-Jan. Exports of large cardamom rose 26% to 1,320 tonnes. Exports of ginger surged 40% to 119,375 tonnes. Exports of curry powder and paste saw an increase of 39% during the period to 88,539 tonnes.

 

Coriander exports rose 5% on year during Apr-Jan to 52,006 tonnes, the data showed. Turmeric exports rose 2% on year to 151,933 tonnes. Other spices that recorded a sizeable increase in exports included chilli, garlic, and tamarind.
