India's sugar output up 9% YoY at 27.1 mln tn as of March end - Federation

NEW DELHI – Mills in India produced 27.12 million tonnes sweetener as of March end, up 9% on year, in the sugar season that started October, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. Sugar production has risen due to higher sugarcane crushing and improvement in the recovery rate to 9.56% from 9.37% last year.
As of Tuesday, 74 mills were operational across the country, against 113 units a year ago, the federation data showed. At the start of the crushing season, 541 mills were operational against 533 last year.
Sugar production in Maharashtra surged 23.5% to nearly 9.9 million tonnes as of Tuesday. The state's production rose as sugarcane crushing rose nearly 24% to 104.2 million tonnes, coupled with a good sugar recovery rate at 9.5%. Maharashtra had eight mills running as of Tuesday, compared with 6 mills a year ago.
Sugar production in Uttar Pradesh was 8.75 million tonnes, tad down from 8.77 million tonnes at the same time last year. There were 38 operational mills in the state, down from 57 mills operating at the same time last year. The average sugar recovery rose to 10.20% from 9.70% last year.
In Karnataka, sugar production was nearly 4.68 million tonnes as of Tuesday, up from about 4.0 million tonnes a year ago. The state had one mill running in the state against four mills last year. The average sugar recovery rate in the state rose to 8.65% from 8.50% last year, the federation said. End
