Govt extends duty waiver on tur, urad imports, retains 30% on yellow peas

MUMBAI – The government extended the waiver on import duty on tur and urad by another year till Mar. 31, 2027, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in several notifications released late on Tuesday. The government has retained the 30% import duty on yellow peas for another year till the same date, according to one of the notifications.
Earlier, the government had allowed duty-free imports of tur and urad till Mar. 31, 2026. The government first allowed duty-free imports of both the pulses on May 15, 2021, and has been extending it since then. During Apr-Jan, India imported 1.35 million tonnes of tur, up nearly 16% on year, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. India imported 904,960 tonnes of urad in the same period, up more than 35% on year, according to the data.
The government had imposed a 30% duty on imports of yellow peas on Nov. 1, 2026, after multiple extensions of a duty-free import policy since December 2023. Prior to December 2023, imports of yellow peas attracted a 50% import duty.
With no import duty from December 2023 to November 2025, yellow pea has become India's highest-imported legume in terms of volume. India imported a record 6.94 million tonnes of pulses in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), nearly double that in 2023-24. At 2.9 million tonnes, yellow peas accounted for about 31% of the total imports of pulses. In Apr-Jan, the country imported 1.0 million tonnes yellow peas, down nearly 49% on year, data from the commerce ministry showed. End
