MUMBAI – Mustard seed prices rose in key markets across the country on firm demand from millers and lower new crop arrivals, traders said. Soybean and groundnut prices were steady, they said.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose by INR 125 to INR 7,425-INR 7,450 per 100 kilograms due to lower arrivals. There is also good demand from crushers for domestic oilseeds as imports have become expensive, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Mustard seed arrivals across the country were at 700,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), the same as the previous day.

In Kota, Rajasthan, mustard seed prices rose INR 50 to INR 6,900 per 100 kg on Monday, according to Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. Arrivals in Kota were at 18,000 bags, down 2,000 bags from the previous day. Prices rose due to lower arrivals, said Sameriya.

With the war in West Asia already in its fourth week and showing no signs of resolution, one of the biggest casualties has been the supply chains of various commodities. Given India's heavy dependence on edible oil imports, an increase in their prices has been the most immediate effect of the crisis. Domestic mustard oil prices have risen by INR 180 to INR 1,490 per 100 kg since Feb. 27, according to market participants.

SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,850-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals in the Ratlam market were at 2,200 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), down 100 bags from the previous day. In Kota, soybean prices were steady at INR 5,400 per 100 kg. Arrivals in Kota were at 11,000 bags, up 1,000 bags from the previous day.

GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 3,250-INR 8,200 per 100 kg. Arrivals were at 3,700 bags (1 bag = 30 kg), the same as the previous day. Groundnut prices could rise in the near term due to concern about lower output, traders said.
