MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh fell as mills tried to meet their quota for March before the month ended, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady, they said.
In Uttar Pradesh, some mills cut prices by INR 20-INR 25 per 100 kg as they were under pressure to meet the monthly quota, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills in Uttar Pradesh had a sales quota of 755,196 tonnes of sugar for March. Most mills have met their March sales quotas, but a few have fallen short and reduced prices to offload their stock. Gupta said mills are likely to raise prices at the start of April as there will be demand from households.
Meanwhile, sugar prices in Maharashtra remained unchanged amid steady supply. The sugar sales quota for April is sufficient for the month's demand and is in line with market expectations, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Kuvadia expects prices to remain largely range-bound in the coming days.
On Thursday, the Centre announced a sugar sales quota of 2.30 million tonnes for April, down from 2.35 million tonnes a year ago but higher than 2.25 million tonnes in March. Market participants had expected the sales quota for April to be around 2.30 million-2.35 million tonnes, as demand for sugar is expected to rise with the progression of the summer season.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Down INR 20-INR 25 at INR 3,910-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 20-INR 25 at INR 3,910-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,810-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,995-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1804 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 0.3% at 15.81 cents per pound. End
US$1 = INR 94.83
