Gujarat summer crop area up 15% YoY at 1.13 mln ha as of Mar 30

MUMBAI – The area sown under summer crops in Gujarat was 1.13 million hectares as of Mar. 30, up nearly 15% from 986,388 hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the summer crop season, which is the average of the last three years, is 1.18 million hectares, of which over 96% has been covered.
The area under paddy rose to 130,297 hectares from 126,348 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize rose to 7,125 hectares from 6,710 hectares a year ago. The area under bajra rose to 301,745 hectares from 209,767 hectares.
Moong acreage in the state so far was 48,448 hectares, down from 53,264 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad fell to 27,853 hectares from 29,355 hectares a year ago.
The total area under all summer oilseeds in the state was up at 182,964 hectares from 161,258 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Groundnut acreage was 64,667 hectares, up from 46,734 hectares a year ago. Sesame acreage rose to 118,297 hectares from 114,524 hectares a year ago.
The area under vegetables rose to 93,262 hectares from 90,395 hectares a year ago. The area under onions, which is not included in the vegetable acreage, was 9,304 hectares, down from 10,927 hectares last year. Sugarcane acreage was up at 11,349 hectares from 10,753 hectares a year ago.
In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during summer. End
