MUMBAI – The Solvent Extractors' Association of India has projected mustard production in India at 11.94 million tonnes for the 2025-26 rabi season, a significant rise from 11.52 million tonnes in the previous season. The increase in output is primarily driven by higher acreage, along with marginal gains in productivity across key producing states, the association said in a release.

The all-India mustard acreage, according to a field survey conducted by Agribusiness System Ltd., is seen at 9.39 million hectares in 2025-26, up from 9.22 million hectares a year ago. Due to favourable weather conditions and improved agronomic practices, the average yield has also improved to 1,271 kilograms per hectare, up from 1,250 kg per hectare, the association said.

"Up by around 3.5%, this growth trajectory, from about 86 lakh tonnes (8.6 million tonnes) in 2019-20 to nearly 120 lakh tonnes (12.0 million tonnes) in the current year, is a testament to improved agronomic practices, better farmer awareness, and favourable policy support," said Sanjeev Asthana, president of SEA. At the state levels, output is likely to be the highest in Rajasthan among all states at 5.39 million tonnes, up from 5.20 million tonnes last year.

Uttar Pradesh is estimated to record a notable rise in mustard production at 1.81 million tonnes from 1.56 million tonnes last year. In Madhya Pradesh, production is seen falling marginally to 1.39 million tonnes from 1.47 million tonnes last year, according to the association.

But Assam reported lower yields, which led to a decline in its mustard output estimates. Mustard output in West Bengal is seen at 740,000 tonnes, up from 680,000 tonnes, and in Gujarat, it is seen at 590,000 tonnes compared to 540,000 tonnes last year. In Assam, output is estimated at 210,000 tonnes, down from 250,000 tonnes last year, and output in Bihar is expected to be unchanged at 90,000 tonnes, according to SEA.

"Overall, the rabi 2025-26 mustard crop presents a positive outlook, reinforcing India's oilseed availability scenario, although regional variations in yield and acreage trends continue to shape the production landscape," Vijay Data, chairman of the association, said.  End
