--SEBI extends ban on 7 agri commodity derivatives trade till Mar 31, 2027

NEW DELHI – The Securities and Exchange Board of India has extended its ban on derivatives trading in seven commodities for another year, until March 31, 2027, the regulator said in a release. The seven farm commodities are non-basmati paddy, wheat, chana, mustard seed and its derivatives, soybean and its derivatives, crude palm oil, and moong.

In 2021, the government had imposed a ban on derivatives trading in these farm commodities for a year and has been extending it every year since then.

The government did not specify the reasons for extending the ban. The government had banned derivatives trading in these essential commodities to curb speculation and price volatility.

The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange has been urging the government to revoke the suspension in futures trading, as it helps the market discover prices and reduces reliance on international price signals. End
