NEW DELHI – Ex-mill prices of sugar rose slightly in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh, aided by limited supplies. However, prices were steady in Maharashtra, as demand and supply were largely in balance, traders said.

"Prices are up INR 5-INR 10 from Wednesday. Supplies are restricted. Most mills have completed their March sales quota," said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills in Uttar Pradesh had a sales quota of 755,196 tonnes of sugar for March, and most of which has already been offloaded in the market.

Meanwhile, sugar prices in Maharashtra remained steady from Thursday amid steady supply. "April sales quota is sufficient for the month's demand. It is in line with market expectations," said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Kuvadia expects prices to remain largely range-bound in the coming days.

On Thursday, the Centre announced a sugar sales quota of 2.30 million tonnes for April, a tad down from 2.35 million tonnes a year ago but higher than 2.25 million tonnes a month earlier. Market participants had expected the sales quota for April to be around 2.30 million-2.35 million tonnes, as demand for sugar is expected to rise with the progression of the summer season.

The Centre is yet to release the notification detailing the state-wise sales quota for April. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets the monthly sales quota for each sugar mill.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 5-INR 10 at INR 3,930-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 5-INR 10 at INR 3,930-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,810-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,995-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1648 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down 0.5% at 15.79 cents per pound. The contract had hit an over five-month high of 15.97 per pound Thursday, tracking the rally in crude oil prices. Rising crude oil prices encourage higher diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar. End
