MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur rose in key spot markets across the country, traders said. As most markets were shut for Ram Navami and arrivals were low, prices rose in markets that were open. Prices of tur are expected to rise once markets reopen after holidays for year-end and festivals due to increased demand from millers and traders, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 25 from Thursday to INR 5,600-INR 5,626 per 100 kilogram, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Many market participants are busy with bookkeeping as the financial year is coming to a close, Kedia said. But this year, markets closed earlier than before because of Ram Navami, which was on Thursday in some regions and on Friday in others, he said. With no arrivals, prices rose amid demand from millers and traders looking to meet their immediate needs, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 15 from Thursday to INR 5,550-INR 5,600 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola rose by INR 100 from Thursday to INR 8,025-INR 8,050 per 100 kg, Kedia said. "Demand from wholesalers has picked up now, but there were no arrivals today because of the festival, so prices rose," he said. Prices of imported tur also rose as many buyers turned to imports amid the lack of domestic arrivals, he said. Prices are expected to rise further once markets reopen next week, driven by demand from millers and traders looking to stock up their processing pipelines, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 to INR 8,150-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices were unavailable as the market in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was shut, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Most markets in north India are shut today for Ram Navami, he said.  End
