MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and rice were steady in Vashi in Navi Mumbai and maize in Davangere, Karnataka, traders said. Prices are unchanged amid low market activity as most markets are shut for Ram Navami, they said. Wheat and rice prices are likely to remain unchanged in the short term, as many markets will be closed for most of next week, they said.

WHEAT prices in Vashi were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said wholesale trader Devendra Vora. Prices of various varieties of RICE were also steady in the market, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice were at INR 8,500–INR 8,700 per 100 kg, 1121 basmati at INR 9,400–INR 9,500 per 100 kg, and 1509 basmati rice at INR 8,500 per 100 kg.

Many markets will remain shut till Thursday next week, ahead of the upcoming financial year-end and Mahavir Jayanti on Tuesday, he said. Prices of most grains are expected to be steady till all markets reopen, Vora said.

The market will begin receiving peak arrivals of the new rabi wheat crop from next week, said Ravi Mehta, a trader from Kota in Rajasthan. Prices could buckle under arrival pressure, he said. Currently, the quality of the new crop is satisfactory, he said.

Some of the standing crops in northern states have been affected by the ongoing wet spell, Mehta said. Many parts of north India have recorded a continuous spell of pre-monsoon showers over the last two weeks, which has damaged the quality of some of the wheat crop, he said. However, the damage is unlikely to be too worrisome, he said.

Prices of MAIZE in Davangere were unchanged at INR 1,650-INR 1,800 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were also steady at 1,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said.

Spot markets in Indore, Madhya Pradesh and in Kota were shut on Friday for Ram Navami.  End
