NEW DELHI - The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for April at 2.30 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X. The quota for next month is 2.1% lower than the 2.35 million tonnes in April 2025, but up 2.2% from 2.25 million tonnes in March 2026.
Market participants had expected the sales quota for April to be around 2.30 million tonnes-2.35 million tonnes, as demand for sugar is expected to rise with the progression of the summer season. Bulk buyers such as ice-cream and cool drink manufacturers typically buy more sugar as temperatures soar in April and May.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets the monthly sales quota for each sugar mill. End
