MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Telangana was 8.16 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up nearly 9% from 7.49 million acres a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture government. The area covered so far has surpassed the season's normal of 6.87 million acres.

Paddy acreage in the state rose to 5.98 million acres from 5.67 million acres a year ago, according to the report. The area under maize was at 1.23 million acres, up from 836,107 acres a year ago, and that under jowar was 353,371 acres, against 312,192 acres a year ago.

The area under chana slipped to 205,418 acres from 220,734 acres a year ago, the report showed. Urad acreage fell to 39,106 acres from 47,571 acres, and that of moong was down at 9,833 acres from 12,080 acres. The total area under all rabi pulses was 264,432 acres, down from 289,029 acres a year ago.

The total area under all rabi oilseeds was 258,075 acres, down from 301,602 acres a year ago, according to the report. The area under groundnut fell to 198,303 acres from 246,345 acres. Sesame acreage was down at 22,307 acres from 25,299 acres a year ago, while sunflower acreage rose to 24,340 acres from 19,257 acres.

The area under sugarcane was up at 18,176 acres from 14,102 acres, the report showed. Tobacco acreage fell to 11,037 acres from 17,403 acres a year ago.

Harvest of rabi crops has begun in the state, the report said. Around 71% of the area under moong so far has been harvested, while 67% of the area under groundnut has been harvested. Around 59% of the chana acreage so far has been harvested, and 34% of the urad acreage has also been harvested. About 30% of sunflower, 21% of maize, 14% of sesame, and 7% of the jowar acreage has been harvested so far, it said.

During the northeast monsoon, which spans from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, the state received 189.6 millimetres of rainfall, 72% above normal for the period. From Jan. 1 to Feb. 28 — which is termed as winter rainfall — the state recorded a 48% deficit in rainfall, the report said. Telangana has recorded 7.8 millimetres of rain in March so far, 28% below the normal for the month. "The good rainfall received across the state is expected to facilitate favourable soil moisture conditions, leading to improved crop coverage during the current Yasangi (rabi) season," it said.

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 471.95 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 421.15 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to the report.  End
