Maharashtra summer crop area dn 18% YoY at 332,209 ha as of Wed

MUMBAI – The area under summer crops in Maharashtra stood at 332,209 hectares as of Wednesday, down more than 18% from 405,645 hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the season is 444,109 hectares, of which nearly 75% has been covered so far.
Paddy acreage in the state was down at 138,969 hectares from 139,213 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize fell to 61,018 hectares from 74,758 hectares a year ago, and that under bajra was also down at 24,874 hectares from 31,327 hectares.
Moong acreage in the season so far slipped to 10,658 hectares from 11,348 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area sown under urad was 1,174 hectares, down from 1,384 hectares.
The total area under all summer oilseeds was 76,231 hectares, down from 116,761 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Groundnut acreage fell to 56,101 hectares from 83,496 hectares, while sesame area was down at 18,039 hectares from 24,677 hectares a year ago.
Summer crops are grown for a short period between the kharif and rabi seasons, with harvest done between April and May. Besides rice, sesame and groundnut are grown during this period. Other major summer crops in the state are fruits and vegetables such as banana, pumpkin, and tomato.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 55.6% of the live storage capacity as of Friday, compared with 48.1% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
