MUMBAI – Prices of mustard seed rose in Kota due to concern about lower output and were steady in Jaipur, traders said. Soybean prices fell in Kota and were steady in Ratlam and those of groundnut were steady in key markets, they said. Oilseed prices are likely to increase in the coming days due to concern over lower output and increase in cost of import amid the war in West Asia, traders added.
MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur were steady at INR 7,150-INR 7,175 per 100 kilograms as they had risen by INR 225 on Friday and there was limited demand at those prices, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Mustard seed arrivals across the country were at 1.1 million bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up from 1.05 million bags the previous day, according to GGN Research. But there are concerns of lower mustard output, which may support prices in the near term, traders said.
In Kota, Rajasthan, mustard seed prices rose by INR 200 to INR 6,750 per 100 kg, said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader. A lower production outlook could lead to prices surging further, Sameriya said. Arrivals were at 30,000 bags, up 8,000 bags from the previous day, he said. This season, several regions experienced dry conditions combined with rising temperatures, which accelerated crop maturity and affected seed development, said Amit Gupta, analyst at Kedia Advisory. Mustard crops typically benefit from winter showers, which help improve plant growth and yield potential.
Moreover, with the war in West Asia already in its fourth week and showing no signs of resolution, one of the most vital consequences for the global economy has been the hit to supply chains of various commodities. Given India's heavy dependence on import of edible oils, an increase in their prices has been the most immediate effect of the crisis. Domestic mustard oil prices have risen by INR 180 to INR 1,490 per 100 kg since Feb. 27, according to market participants.
SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 2,850-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, after rising by INR 100 on Monday due to firm demand from millers, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Arrivals in the Ratlam market were at 2,300 bags (1 bag = 40 kg), same as the previous day. In Kota, however, soybean prices fell INR 50 to INR 5,400 per 100 kg, Sameriya said. Arrivals in Kota were at 10,000 bags, down 2,000 bags from the previous day, he added.
However, domestic refined soyoil prices rose nearly 14% since end of February to INR 1,509 per 100 kg. This implies that there is going to be demand from millers for domestic soybean oilseed as import cost has increased. Soyoil imports have been affected with longer and more expensive shipment routes from South America adding to costs, said Indrajit Paul, head of research at Agrocorp International. "A surge in soyoil prices has also led to 50% of millers' and crushers' revenue coming from soyoil alone," he added.
GROUNDNUT prices in Ratlam were steady at INR 3,250-INR 8,200 per 100 kg, after rising by INR 100 on Monday due to firm demand amid concern of lower output. Arrivals were at 3,700 bags (1 bag = 30 kg), same as the previous day. Groundnut prices could rise in the near term due to concern about lower output, traders said.
