MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar rose in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh as there was demand from the resale market, traders said. Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady as demand was limited, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh raised prices by INR 15-INR 20 per 100 kg due to firm demand from the resale markets, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. The resale market raised prices by INR 5-INR 10 per 100 kg as they ran out of stocks in the pipeline, he said. Prices are likely to stabilise at these levels, Gupta said.

In Maharashtra, mills kept prices steady as demand was need-based, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Sugar prices in the state may fall by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg in the coming days before stabilising, Kuvadia said. Mills are also awaiting the release of the sales quota for April, he added.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,915-INR 4,020 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 15-INR 20 at INR 3,915-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,805-INR 3,820 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,990-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1849 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 1.6% at 15.77 cents per pound, tracking gains in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Higher crude oil prices increase the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, decreasing the availability of sugar.  End
