NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric and coriander fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Tuesday while those of jeera were up. While turmeric has been falling on rise in arrivals, coriander fell on low buying interest. Jeera bounced back after falling for three consecutive days, analysts said.

The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was down 0.4% at INR 11,522 per 100 kg, as buying interest was subdued, SMC Global Securities said in a note. However, prospects of lower production and tightening supplies could cap the fall. The acreage under coriander is likely to decline by around 12% to 297,900 hectares, potentially leading to a near 13% drop in output, according to data by the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders. "With supply anticipated to stay restricted and buying interest gradually improving, market sentiment is likely to remain positive, keeping prices elevated in the near term," analysts at SMC Global Securities said.

The most-active April contract of JEERA was up 0.8% at INR 21,960 per 100 kg, as prices bounced back after three consecutive days of fall, Alok Pandey, analyst at SMC Global said. The contract also rose as prices in the spot market of Unjha were firm, he said. Prices have been falling since arrivals began in key producing regions. According to Pandey, around 70,000 bags, where one bag is about 60 kilograms, have arrived in Gujarat. "The number of arrivals are seen at par and thus I see no major potential for any recovery from the current levels," he said. Pandey expects prices to remain range-bound for time being with weak bias.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 0.2% at INR 14,190 per 100 kg, primarily because of a significant surge in market arrivals, SMC Global said. Arrivals have almost doubled over the last week to 26,599 tonnes, the brokerage said. "At the same time, demand sentiment remains lackluster, as buyers are adopting a wait-and-watch approach, holding back purchases in anticipation of more attractive price levels," it said in a report. In the near term, arrivals are expected to increase further, particularly with higher inflows from Maharashtra's Marathwada region, which could add to the prevailing supply-side pressure, according to SMC Global.
