MUMBAI – Prices of wheat showed mixed trends while prices of maize and rice were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of wheat rose in some markets amid higher demand from stockists, they said. Prices of maize remained steady as demand for the grain matched its supply, while basmati rice prices were unchanged as the market is monitoring the continued hostilities in West Asia, they said.

 

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, rose by INR 50-INR 70 per 100 kg from Monday to INR 2,200-INR 2,250 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Prices of the best quality wheat rose by INR 200-INR 220 per 100 kg from the previous day to INR 2,500-INR 2,650 per 100 kg, he said. Arrivals of the new rabi wheat crop fell by 75,000 bags to 125,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said.

 

Wheat prices rose because of a rise in demand from stockists, Mehta said. With a rise in arrivals of the new crop this week, prices are currently ruling in a slightly lower range, prompting some stockists to make purchases, he said. More stockists are expected to make purchases if prices fall in the near term, he said.

 

The current wet spell in many parts of north India has affected the standing wheat crop, Mehta said. Though no crop damage has been reported, the quality of the grain has been affected in regions which recorded a continuous spell of showers, he said. "There is a change of colour of the wheat kernel in its growing stage. Instead of a nice green colour, it takes on a pale yellow or brownish hue because of higher moisture content," he explained. However, the extent of damage is not worrisome and is unlikely to have an impact on prices, he said.

 

The price of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was steady at INR 2,460 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. The price was unchanged amid steady demand for the arrivals of the new rabi crop, he said. The price of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, was also steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said wholesale trader Devendra Vora.

 

The price of MAIZE in Indore was unchanged at INR 1,850 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The price is steady as demand for the coarse grain is on a par with supply, he said. "Whatever new arrivals are coming in the market are being sold," he said. Arrivals of the new rabi crop are expected to rise next week and peak by mid-April. As such, prices could fall by INR 100 per 100 kg or more next month, he said.

 

Prices of maize in Davangere, Karnataka, remained steady at INR 1,650-INR 1,750 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 2,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said.

 

Prices of various varieties of RICE were steady in Vashi, Vora said. Prices of 1401 basmati rice were at INR 8,500–INR 8,700 per 100 kg, 1121 basmati rice at INR 9,400–INR 9,500 per 100 kg, and 1509 basmati rice at INR 8,500 per 100 kg. Prices of basmati rice have settled as most of the market has entered a "wait-and-watch stance" amid the military hostilities in West Asia, he said.

 

Basmati rice prices are expected to remain range-bound in the near term till the Strait of Hormuz becomes accessible once more for Indian shipments to reach West Asian countries, which are the biggest destination for Indian exports, Mehta said.  End
