Gujarat summer crop area up 13% on year at 837,052 ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area sown under summer crops in Gujarat was 837,052 hectares as of Monday, up over 13% from 739,891 hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The normal acreage for the summer crop season, which is the average of the last three years, is 1.18 million hectares, of which 71% has been covered.
The area under paddy rose to 126,180 hectares from 126,061 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under maize was down at 5,192 hectares from 5,955 hectares a year ago. The area under bajra rose to 171,981 hectares from 149,672 hectares.
Moong acreage in the state so far was 43,488 hectares, up from 30,940 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad rose to 26,071 hectares from 20,830 hectares a year ago.
The total area under all summer oilseeds in the state was up at 149,411 hectares from 111,757 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Groundnut acreage was 45,300 hectares, up from 30,903 hectares a year ago. Sesame acreage rose to 104,111 hectares from 80,854 hectares a year ago.
The area under vegetables rose to 77,353 hectares from 73,880 hectares a year ago. The area under onions, which is not included in the vegetable acreage, was 6,958 hectares, up from 6,742 hectares last year. Sugarcane acreage was up at 10,369 hectares from 10,034 hectares a year ago.
In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during summer. End
