MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh were steady on Monday, traders said. Markets in Maharashtra were shut on Monday, they said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as demand was limited, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. But mills in the resale market raised prices by INR 10-INR 15 per 100 kg as they were running out of stock, Gupta said. Mills are likely to increase prices within a day or two as there will be firm demand from the resale market, he added.

Markets in Maharashtra were shut on account of the death anniversary of Annasaheb Patil, a prominent leader of the Maratha reservation movement and Mathadi workers. Sugar prices in the state may fall by INR 10-INR 20 per 100 kg in the coming days before stabilising, Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 9,900-INR 4,010 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

At 1834 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were down nearly 1% at 15.55 cents per pound, tracking losses in crude oil prices on NYMEX. Lower crude oil prices decrease the diversion of sucrose for ethanol production, increasing the availability of sugar.  End

US$1 = INR 93.97
