NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera fell while those of coriander were up on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchnage Monday. While turmeric has been falling as arrivals rise, jeera was down in anticipation of new crop arrivals rising. Coriander prices rose on expectations of lower production, according to analysts.
At 1426 IST, the most active April contract of CORIANDER was up 0.5% at INR 11,550 per 100 kg, supported by expectations of lower production and tightening supply conditions, SMC Global Securities said in a note. The acreage under coriander is likely to decline by around 12% to 297,900 hectares, potentially resulting in a near 13% drop in output, according to data from the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders. "With supply anticipated to stay restricted and buying interest gradually improving, market sentiment is likely to remain positive, keeping prices elevated in the near term," analysts at the brokerage wrote.
The most-active April contract of JEERA was down 2.2% at INR 21,650 per 100 kg in anticipation of increased arrivals of the new crop in several markets, SMC Global said. Arrivals have already begun in key producing regions and are picking up momentum, which is putting some near-term pressure on prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Comfortable supplies and relatively weak export demand, supported by adequate existing stocks, also weighed on market sentiment, it said.
The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 3.7% at INR 14,002 per 100 kg, primarily because of a significant surge in market arrivals, SMC Global said. Arrivals surged 112% to 26,599 tonnes last week, according to the brokerage. "Demand conditions remain subdued as buyers continue to maintain a cautious stance, preferring to wait for more favorable price levels before entering the market," it said in its report. In the near term, arrivals are expected to increase further, particularly with higher inflows from Maharashtra's Marathwada region, which could add to the prevailing supply-side pressure, according to SMC Global.
Following were the prices of the most-active spices contracts at 1426 IST:
