MUMBAI – Futures contracts of coriander and turmeric traded lower on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Friday, while jeera contracts were steady. Turmeric fell due to higher arrivals and coriander prices were down as demand was subdued, analysts said.

The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was down 0.3% at INR 11,466 per 100 kg, as buying interest was subdued, SMC Global Securities said in a note. However, prospects of lower production and tightening supplies could cap the fall. The acreage under coriander is likely to decline by around 12% to around 297,900 hectares, potentially leading to a near 13% drop in output, according to data by the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders. "With supply anticipated to stay restricted and buying interest gradually improving, market sentiment is likely to remain positive, keeping prices elevated in the near term," analysts at SMC Global Securities said.

The most-active April contract of JEERA was steady at INR 22,145 per 100 kg. Prices are likely to fall due to high arrivals of the new crop in several markets, SMC Global said. Arrivals have begun in key producing regions and have picked up momentum, which may put some near-term pressure on prices, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Comfortable supplies and relatively weak export demand, supported by adequate existing stocks, have also weighed on market sentiment, the brokerage said.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 2.2% at INR 14,422 per 100 kg as arrivals were higher. Arrivals surged by 112% to 26,599 tonnes during the week, according to SMC Global Securities. "Buying activity remains subdued, as market participants continue to adopt a cautious stance, awaiting lower price levels before initiating fresh deals," analysts said. Arrivals are likely to pick up further in the coming weeks, which may exert more pressure on prices, particularly with higher inflows anticipated from the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, according to SMC Global.
